Track travels to L.A. to take on nation's best
Repeating last weekend's success will be a challenge for the UA track and field team, which travels to Los Angeles this weekend to compete against some of the nation's top squads.
The Wildcats will head to UCLA's Drake Stadium this weekend to compete in the Rafer Johnson/ Jackie Joyner Kersee Invitational. Arizona is coming off a strong meet last Saturday in Tucson, in which it took first place in 28 of 38 events.
On the men's side, the Wildcats will be competing against top-ranked Arkansas, as well as No. 19 UCLA and no. 25 Georgia. The No. 16 Arizona women will face the No. 7 Razorbacks and the No. 8 Bruins.
The meet this weekend will mark the first annual running of the Invitational. The meet honors two of UCLA's most noted athletes ÷ Johnson who won a decathlon gold medal in the 1960 Olympic games in Rome and Kersee who is the world record holder in the heptathlon and winner of six Olympic medals, including three gold.
Women's tennis serves up Washington schools
The UA women's tennis team heads north this weekend to the Evergreen State to take on conference rivals, Washington and Washington State.
The 45th ranked Cougars and the 10th ranked Huskies look to extend the Wildcats Pac-10 losing streak to eight and nine games. No. 41 Arizona is coming off a weekend where Pac-10 powerhouses UCLA and USC swept the Wildcats, dropping the women to 5-8 on the season.
Friday's match versus the Cougars will pit two teams looking for its first conference win against one another. Washington State has lost all five of its Pac-10 meets.
UA's Emilie Scribot, a graduate student from Toulouse currently ranked No. 20 nationally, France has won two straight matches, including an upset of No. 6 Jewel Peterson of Southern California.
The Wildcats will return home on Tuesday to face the Longhorns of the University of Texas at the Robson Tennis Center.
Gardner named second team All-American
After being named a Wooden Award All-American, senior Jason Gardner was recognized by the Associated Press as being one of the country's best.
The 5-foot-10 Gardner was named a second team All-American by the AP after averaging 14.8 points, 4.0 rebounds and 4.9 assists in 32 games this season.
Gardner is joined by Oklahoma's Hollis Price, Boston College's Troy Bell, Carmelo Anthony from Syracuse and Creighton's Kyle Korver.
Fellow senior Luke Walton was voted an Honorable Mention All-American.
