Polk helps USA to young women world title

The USA avenged an earlier loss to Brazil to win the 2003 FIBA World Championship, 71-55, aided by UA sophomore center Shawntinice Polk and her 14 points.

Polk, who shot 7-for-10 from the floor, was the game's second leading scorer. LSU's Seimone Augustus led the team with 18 points. Playing 26 minutes, Polk scored in double digits for the second straight game. Against France, she had a game high 15 points.

The USA's (7-1) only loss in the tournament was to Brazil, 73-60 in the preliminary rounds.

Men's basketball game at Texas moved to NYC

The UA men's basketball team and 2003 Final Four team Texas will finish up their four-game home series in New York City rather than Austin.

Originally slated to play the Longhorns Dec. 10 in Texas, the UA will instead play UT in the Jimmy V Classic in Madison Square Garden on Dec. 9. The last time the UA played in the "Mecca of basketball" was in 2001 in the Coaches versus Cancer Classic, which the UA won by upsetting No. 2 Maryland and No. 6 Florida. Arizona has beaten Texas the last six years.

The UA may also add a game to the weekend it plays 2003 Final Four team Marquette, which is Dec. 13, making it part of the Hispanic College Fund Tournament.

Ex UA golfers enjoy historic day

Former Wildcat Annika Sorenstam won the Women's British Open and Jim Furyk held off Tiger Woods to win the Buick Open on a banner day for former UA golfers last Sunday.

Sorenstam became only the sixth female golfer to complete a career Grand Slam by beating Se Ri Pak by a stroke, shooting a 10 under 278. Since becoming the first woman in 58 years to compete in a PGA tour event in May, Sorenstam has won two LPGA majors. She also won the McDonald's LPGA in June.

Furyk's career year continued by winning twice in the same year for the first time in his career by shooting in the 60s all four rounds in Buick Open to leave Woods and three others tied for second.

Sorenstam's win in England overshadowed former Wildcat Lorena Ochoa's second round. Ochoa shot a 65, the best round of the day, jumping from a tie for 70th to a tie for fourth. Ochoa finished with a two over.

FSN AZ to rebroadcast football games, including Emmy nominated 2002 Utah game

Starting this Saturday, Fox Sports Net Arizona will rebroadcast Arizona football games from the past few seasons, highlighted by the Emmy Nominated 2002 Utah game.

This Saturday the replays start with the 2002 Utah at Arizona game at 3:30 p.m. Fox Sports Net's broadcast was nominated for an Emmy after Arizona won 23-17 in the closing seconds on a controversial call.

Arizona led the favored Utes 23-7 in the third quarter but need a late defensive stand to hold off Utah.

On Saturday Aug. 16 at 3:30, FSN AZ will show the ASU at Arizona game in 2000, the final game of Dick Tomey, the UA's winningest coach, who resigned after the game, a 30-17 Wildcat loss. After that game, the network will show the 2001 UA at ASU game, 34-21, after which a donnybrook broke out.

The replays end the next Saturday at 6:30 p.m. with last year's Arizona and ASU game.
