UA awarded largest grant in school history to explore Mars further

In March 2001, UA scientists helped find water on Mars. In May 2008, they will help look for life.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) announced Monday that the University of Arizona was awarded a $325 million grant ÷ the largest grant in UA history ÷ to study water and organic molecules just beneath the surface of the planet. [Read article]

Late marketing junior inspired classmates, loved sports

In the fall of 2000, when Nick Hohnbaum moved into Cochise's third-floor west wing, he met several young men who, during the next three years, would change his life.

He would also forever change theirs.

Returning from Lake Havasu City Saturday afternoon, the 21-year-old marketing junior was headed eastbound on I-10 outside Phoenix when one of the rear tires on his Bronco blew out, causing the vehicle to roll over three to four times. Nick broke his neck during the accident and was airlifted to the hospital, where he died around 11:30 p.m. [Read article]

Syphillis cases rising in Tucson

Students can receive treatment at various locations in Tucson, including Campus Health

The number of reported cases of syphilis in Pima County has increased by 300 percent in the past three years, leading experts to classify the spread as an "epidemic."

"The problem with the epidemic is it is all over the place. There is no specific age group, gender or ethnic group," said Scott A. Davey, the manager of the HIV Intervention Prevention (HIP)/AZ program at the Southern Arizona Aids Foundation. [Read article]

· 46 senators put pressure on President Bush to declassify the remaining 28 pages of the 9/11 investigative report, Democracy Now! reported Monday.

· 1 gay bishop was temporarily approved by a group of New Hampshire Episcopal Church members. Rev. V. Gene Robinson is awaiting further approval after being accused of possible improper conduct.

· 2 dozen or more forest fires still rage in the western United States although the U.S. Forest Service declared Monday that the agency's firefighting budget has been exhausted, according to the Associated Press. [Read article]

"Trading Spaces" to hit the UA campus

Two female and two male UA students will get down and dirty and do some redecorating Saturday night on "Trading Spaces."

Two of the show's designers, Genevieve Gorder and Edward Wilson, will help the students redecorate each other's rooms.

Gorder will add some Egyptian flair to the womens' living room, and Wilson will give the mens' living room a nightclub feel in red and purple. [Read article]
