Suspicious activity
A student told police he was just joking with his mother Monday, after another student reported overhearing him talking on his phone about killing people in the library, reports stated.
At about 9 p.m., a female student reported a person making threatening remarks on his cell phone. She told police she had been on the fourth floor of the Main Library, 1510 E. University Blvd., when she overheard the man in front of her talking on his cell phone.
She said he was talking about killing people on the fourth floor of the library, reports stated.
The reporting student went to the main lobby to contact police and did not know if the student would be on the same floor or not. She described the man to police and said he was carrying a dark book-bag or briefcase.
Police searched the floors of the library, but did not find the suspect. As officers advised the library staff of the situation, the reporting student walked up to officers and said she had just seen the same student on the fourth floor. She said he was now wearing a different shirt, but that it was definitely the student she had overheard.
Officers escorted the student to the fourth floor where she pointed the man out to police, and then left the floor.
Officers spoke with the student who identified himself and gave officers consent to search his bag.
An officer asked the student if he had spoken to anyone on his cell phone while he was in the library. He said he had talked with his mother. He then became very nervous, reports stated.
He said he was unhappy in Tucson and was "blowing off steam" and joking with his mother, but hesitated to say exactly what he had said.
The student kept repeating that he would never hurt anybody or follow through with anything. He then asked if an officer would speak to his mother to verify that he had not made any threats.
Neither of the police officers had mentioned anything about him making threats, reports stated.
The student dialed his mother's phone number and an officer spoke with her. His mother said her son was upset and joking, and had not made any threats.
Police advised the student to be more aware of his conversations when in public and that some people may consider his speech threatening even if he does not.
Police advised the library staff that they had located the subject and had spoken with him regarding the reported phone conversation, reports stated.
Possession of drugs and paraphernalia
A student told police he had nothing to hide and later said he had smoked marijuana in his dorm room with three other students on Nov. 14, reports stated.
On Nov. 14 at about 8 p.m., police went to a room at Babcock Residence Hall, 1717 E. Speedway Blvd., in response to a report of a strong odor of marijuana coming from the room.
Police spoke with a resident of the room and explained the reason they came. The student said he had not been smoking marijuana and had nothing to hide.
Police asked if they could search the room, and the student said they could not unless they had a warrant.
While speaking with the student about the odor, the student began pulling open drawers and opening boxes. Police asked him what he was doing.
"I am showing you I have nothing to hide," the student said, reports stated.
The student then told officers they could go ahead and search the room. On the top shelf of the closet, an officer found a shoe-box containing two cigarette ends and drug residue.
The student then told the officers he had smoked marijuana in the room about 10 minutes earlier. Police cited the student for possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia and took the shoe-box as evidence.
An officer then asked the student if he had been smoking with others, reports stated.
The student gave police three names of students whom he had smoked with, two of whom lived in the same dorm.
Police went to one of the other student's room and spoke with the named student. After speaking with him, the student told police he had smoked, and when police asked if he had any marijuana, he pulled out 6.2 grams of marijuana in a clear bag, a pipe and rolling papers from his pants pocket.
The student was also cited for possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. All of the items were taken and placed into evidence.
Police went to the second named student's room but no one was home, reports stated.
