Forget ÎA new U,' students tired of all the construction

Is it absolutely necessary that construction at Park Student Union begin in January? During my four-and-a half years here, I have not been able to experience a campus without construction since fall 1998.

Now, don't get me wrong · I am all for "A New U." Hell, I have been giving campus tours since the start of my sophomore year. In fact, I am currently the president of Arizona Ambassadors. The entire group of tour guides understands the value of updating the university for future students to enjoy. We promote its growth and tell all of our tours how much we have loved our times here. Professors and sponsors: the perfect match

Our university is hurting. Funding is again being slashed to the tune of eight figures. Tuition is in danger of rising sharply. And our professors are leaving left and right.

Fortunately, it's our professorial staff that can help turn our budget crunch around. The answer? Commercials in class.

Here's the deal: Professors cut a 30- or 60-second ad for a corporate or local sponsor into their lectures. In turn, the sponsors help fund the UA out of its deficit. It's a match that needs to happen ÷ the sooner the better. [Read article]

Issue of the Week: Sex worker festival: appropriate or not?

The 2002 Sex Worker Arts Festival has generated a lot more attention, both positive and negative, than was likely intended. From articles in the Arizona Daily Star to the lead story of last Thursday's "The O'Reilly Factor," the so-called sex fair, which began Thursday and continued through the weekend, has been accused of being in bad taste and lacking morality. In addition, the fair was supported in part by a $2,700 grant from the Tucson/Pima Arts Council, a publicly-funded organization. [Read article]
