College athletes should never underestimate the value of home-field öö or in this case, home-course öö advantage. The Arizona men's golf team proved that yesterday, coming from behind to win the 16-team Ping Arizona Intercollegiate with a three round team total of 23-under-par.
The Wildcats, paced by junior Chris Nallen, pulled off the impressive win. Nallen finished two under for the day, and nine under par for the tournament ÷ good for second place and the fourth top-10 performance of his career.
Close behind Nallen was senior Ricky Barnes.
Barnes tied for third at eight under par.
Senior Reid Hatley, who was tied for first going into yesterday's final round, slipped into a tie for 10th, two strokes ahead of teammate Andrew Medley, who in his UA debut posted a strong 19th-place finish.
It was on the strength of these four golfers that the Wildcats were able to rally from two holes down to top UCLA. The Bruins headed into the final day with the overall individual leader, as well as the lowest team score, until the Wildcats made their run.
Four of the team's five varsity players finished the final round at even par or better.
Next up for the Wildcats is a trip to Hawaii for the John Burns Invitational in Honolulu on Feb. 19.
