The UA women's soccer team travels to Ames, Iowa for the Iowa State Cyclone Classic where the Wildcats will face Wisconsin today and Northern Iowa on Sunday.

The team won't need to ask for directions around Iowa because UA head coach Cathy Klein knows the area pretty well after coaching at Iowa State for four years.

As the coach at ISU she led her teams to three post-season appearances including a 12-9 season in 1997, which earned her Big 12 Co-Coach of the Year.

In 1999 the Cyclones went 13-8, which included a seven-game winning streak, and guided her team to No. 21 in the national rankings. In her tenure at ISU, beginning in 1995, she netted the 1998 and 1999 Big-12 rookies of the year with a 43-37-1 record.

Unfortunately for Klein, she will not get to play against the Cyclones over the weekend.

This will be the first time UA meets Wisconsin and Northern Iowa on the playing field.

Wisconsin is 1-1-0 on the season after it split its opening tournament in Lincoln, Neb. The Badgers beat Southern California 1-0 on Aug. 30 and then played No. 10 Nebraska and lost a tight game 1-0.

Wisconsin has 22 letter winners returning and out of that seven starters who posted a 5-11-3 record as they finished 11th in the Big Ten. Under head coach Dean Duerst the Badgers have pinned a 93-64-20 record in nine seasons.

Northern Iowa, the only team picked to finish behind first year program Drake, went 4-12-0 last year and 0-6 in Missouri Valley Conference play. So far this year the Panthers are 0-1-1, tying with Western Illinois 2-2 last Friday and then losing to Iowa 1-0 on Sunday. Northern Iowa returns a valuable 10 letter winners and eight starters. Head coach Linda Whitehead has been there for three years and placed a 7-27-3 record.

The Wildcats are coming off one of the best weekends in team history, a weekend that saw them win their own Wildcat Invitational by defeating Cal Poly and Drake with combined scores of 3-0.

close quote marks

The big story of this tournament will be if freshman goalie Amanda Martin can keep her shutout streak going, which stands at two, as she blanked both teams by stopping all 24 shots she faced last weekend.

Someone different scored each goal last weekend as the offense showed its diversity and talent.

Senior defender Tymarie Novak and freshman Lisa Kosena each didn't need help getting by the goalie and redshirt freshman Kelly Nelson accounted for the third. Freshman Erin Clewett added an assist.

Kosena leads the team with six shots, three on goal, and freshman Mallory Miller has taken five shots towards the net. In third place stands sophomore Candice Wilks, last year's top scorer.

The Wildcats are 2-0-0 (0-0-0) on the season. Both wins are shutouts, the first time that has ever happened in school history and the first time since 1997 Arizona has opened with two wins.

The next Wildcat home game is Sept. 22 against the University of San Diego.
