President treated for kidney stones, given pacemaker during New Year’s

New Year’s is usually marked as a festive occasion with people partying the night away with music, dancing and plenty of drinking. This annual ritual is a way for us to say goodbye to the old year and welcome the new.

Matt Loehman undergoes 2nd spinal surgery

A student government senator resigned last week after an MRI revealed his spinal cord was not healing properly from a November surgery, forcing him to return to Tucson last week to undergo a second procedure to fix the problem.

Associated Students of the University of Arizona Sen. Matt Loehman resigned from his senatorial position last week and will take a break from classes for the spring semester. [Read article]

photo ‘Bear Down’ composer dies

Jack Lee served as band director for 33 years

A piece of the university’s musical heritage was lost over the holiday break as Jack Kenneth Lee, former UA director of bands and composer of the school’s fight song, died Dec. 23 of Alzheimer’s disease. He was 84.

Lee served as the UA’s director of bands for 33 years, brought prestige and notoriety to the Pride of Arizona marching band as a member of the American Bandmasters Association, and touched the lives of more than 2,000 students who played under his direction. [Read article]

Third vacancy opens when regent, 82, dies

Gov. Napolitano named a former U.S. senator and a former president of Del Webb Corp. to serve on the Arizona Board of Regents last month.

Dennis DeConcini and Anne Mariucci will become voting members of the governing board for the Arizona university system if confirmed by the Arizona Senate, said student regent Benjamin Graff.

Graff said DeConcini and Mariucci will take the place places of Regents Chris Herstam and Jack Jewett, whose appointments expire this month. [Read article]

ASUA senate still plans to hold impeachment hearing

Student officials are still planning to hold an impeachment hearing for ASUA President Cade Bernsen but are unsure when the hearing will take place, sources said.

“We’re still trying to figure out the right procedure,” said Sen. Matt Boepple, a political science sophomore.

The hearing will not take place at tonight’s senate meeting.

The hearing was previously set for Dec. 7, but was postponed indefinitely due to a technicality in the Associated Students of the University of Arizona constitution. [Read article]

photo Police use video stills to search for fans who climbed goalposts

Fans stormed field after upset win over UCLA

The University of Arizona Police Department is continuing its attempts to identify the individuals involved in the celebration following Arizona’s 52-14 victory over UCLA Nov. 5.

After reviewing film of the celebration, investigators were able to identify five men, who appear to be student-age, as the individuals attempting to bring down the goalpost on the Arizona Stadium football field, reports stated. [Read article]

photo Authorities rule student’s Oct. death a suicide

A 19-year-old student’s October death at the Student Union Memorial Center has been ruled a suicide, according to an autopsy report released in December.

The body of Gregory Thomas Bauer, a music sophomore from Flagstaff, was found by a UA employee on the lowest floor of the SUMC, near Cellar, 1303 E. University Blvd., around 6 a.m. on Oct. 26.

The autopsy report was released Dec. 16. The Arizona Daily Wildcat was not in publication from Dec. 8 to Jan. 10. [Read article]
