UA student jumps from fifth floor of local hotel

A UA student survived jumping off the fifth floor of a university-area hotel Saturday morning in what officials suspected was a suicide attempt.

The incident took place Saturday around 8:46 a.m. at the Marriott University Park Hotel, 880 E. Second St., said Kerry Fuller, a public information officer for the Tucson Police Department.

The female student, in her late 20s, reportedly jumped from the fifth floor on her own accord, with no other foul play involved, officials said.

The patient was taken to the hospital due to injuries, but because of new HIPAA laws, the status of the patient could not be released, said Randy Ogden, deputy chief of the Tucson Fire Department.

Ogden would also not confirm or deny if the jump was officially a suicide attempt.

HIPAA, or the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, creates national standards to protect individuals' medical records and other personal health information, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Web site.

Both TPD and fire officials responded to the call to take care of the patient, said Ogden.

Sgt. Eugene Mejia, spokesman for the University of Arizona Police Department, said UAPD also assisted in the incident, as it was a large-scale event.

"We assisted the jurisdiction that had responded (TPD) by securing the room (and) crowd control," Mejia said.

Mejia said officials are not releasing the name of the student, but did confirm she is listed in the UA directory.
