UA squeaks by Bruins in revived rivalry

An inspired Salim Stoudamire sank the UCLA Bruins with a 27-foot 3-pointer to give the No. 13 Wildcats a 76-73 win in front of 14,559 fans at the McKale Center Saturday afternoon. With the score tied at 73, Stoudamire waved off a Channing Frye screen and was isolated against freshman guard Aaron Afflalo before pulling up from way outside the 3-point line and draining the jumper with 2.5 seconds left. Men's Hoops Analysis: Stoudamire, Shakur lead UA by example

Senior guard Salim Stoudamire's clutch 3-pointer with 2.5 seconds left in Arizona's 76-73 win over UCLA Saturday was indicative of how the entire contest went for the Wildcats.

It was a matter of different players doing exactly what needed to be done at exactly the right time to push the No. 13 Wildcats to 14-3 and 4-1 in the Pacific 10 Conference.

Stoudamire, who was named Pac-10 Player of the Week, took charge of the scoring. [Read article]

Women's Hoops: Bonvicini wins No. 250 as UA splits SoCal road trip

The Arizona women's basketball team secured its first win against a ranked opponent of the season as the Wildcats brought down No. 19 UCLA Sunday at Pauley Pavilion, 84-73.

"(Sunday's) game was a gut-check game and we came out and played Arizona basketball, which is something we haven't done in a couple of weeks," said UA head coach Joan Bonvicini, who recorded her 250th career win at Arizona Sunday. "We played a hard and smart brand of basketball. We played with a great deal of passion. Getting the win on the road was just what the doctor ordered." [Read article]

Icecats destroy Demons

Coming into this weekend's two-game set against DePaul, UA Icecat head coach Leo Golembiewski said offensive inconsistency was an area of concern for the team, but after the Icecats' two blowout wins over the Blue Demons, it might not be that big of a concern.

Arizona outscored Depaul, 25-1 in the two-game sweep, extending its winning streak to four games.

Yet despite the high offensive output and lopsided margins, Golembiewski said Arizona must keep things in perspective heading into their next series against national tournament contender Oklahoma. [Read article]

UA men's, women's swim, dive teams sweep weekend meet

The No. 4 Arizona men's swim team used a 36-point comeback to keep the Wildcats perfect over the weekend, with both the men and women's teams beating Northwestern and Washington in the two-day meet at Hillenbrand Aquatic Center.

"The men's team did a great job coming back, and the women swam well," said UA head coach Frank Busch. "There was a great team effort on the men's side."

Busch said that watching the men's team Friday and Saturday was like watching two different teams, but he added that he did not know what to expect from Washington and Northwestern. [Read article]

The No. 21 Arizona gymnastics team pulled off a come-from-behind victory, knocking off No. 6 Michigan State, in its home-opening meet Friday at McKale Center.

The Gymcats (193.35) beat No. 23 Missouri (191.7), the University of Illinois-Chicago (189.6) and narrowly topped the Spartans (191.95) in the meet's final event.

Trailing the Spartans with only the floor exercise left, the Gymcats got several solid performances, including a near perfect (9.9) out of senior Katie Johnson, to cap off the meet and top No. 6 Michigan State. [Read article]

Minus top players, men's tennis defeats NAU

After losing the doubles point, the No. 26 Arizona men's tennis team won five of six singles matches to defeat NAU Sunday in the home opener of the dual match tennis season.

The Wildcats began the day without their top two singles players, junior Roger Matalonga and senior Colin O'Grady, who also form the team's top doubles pair. O'Grady and Matalonga were competing in Palm Springs, Calif., at the National Collegiate Tennis Classic as singles players and as a doubles team. Their absences gave some freshmen a chance to gain experience early on in the season. [Read article]
