Former NBA center Bill Walton, or "Luke's dad" as he commonly refers to himself, will be the featured speaker at the premier of the new Student Union Memorial Center tonight at 7.
"We'll cover it all that night," Walton said. "We'll cover it all."
The Hall of Famer made the trip to Tucson to attend the Wildcats' final home games this week at McKale Center, not as an announcer, but as a cardinal and navy clad parent.
In 2002, Disney hired Walton as the lead analyst for its NBA coverage on ABC and ESPN. After 13 seasons on the air, "Walton-isms" such as "Throw it down to the big man," have made him a favorite among basketball fans young and old.
But still, it was Walton's accomplishments on the court with the Portland Trailblazers, San Diego and Los Angeles Clippers and Boston Celtics that made his a common name among basketball folklore. After winning two NCAA national titles and three National Player of the Year awards at UCLA, Walton kept the hardware coming during his 14-year NBA career, most notably an NBA championship ring with Portland in 1977 and as the 1978 Most Valuable Player. Walton is the second of only four players in NBA history to lead the league in both blocked shots and rebounding in the same season.
In 1993, Walton was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame. All four of his sons have played collegiate basketball, currently including Chris at San Diego State and Luke at UA.
