The UA men's club soccer team takes the field this weekend when they host the South Western Conference sub-regional tournament.
The No. 2 Wildcats will look to extend their undefeated season when they take on rival Arizona State University and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.
Four teams öö UA, ASU, Northern Arizona University and Embry-Riddle öö will compete at Rincon Vista field Saturday and Sunday vying for a spot in the regional tournament held in Las Vegas. The top two teams from the Arizona sub-regional will be invited to play in the Las Vegas tourney Nov. 1 ö Nov. 3.
"Winning the tournament is our goal, but we should be invited to play in Las Vegas based on our record alone," said head coach David Hunter.
Hunter's 10-0 Wildcats are ranked second behind defending champs Brigham Young University in the Region 6 division of the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association, better known as NIRSA.
Hunter is no stranger to UA soccer. He has served as both a player for the men's club team and coach of the women's team from 1993-1997.
"I'm just doing a service to my team and my school. Not supporting men's soccer is just crazy," Hunter said. "These guys work hard and deserve the recognition they are due."
Hunter's dedication is reflected in his players.
"Every game is important, but this weekend we will be trying to solidify our play for the regionals," said Will Yokubaitus, team captain and president. "This is the best team I've been on in my four years here. Our goal this year is to keep up the tradition of doing well in the nationals and challenge BYU for the championship."
Coming off a weekend series sweep in Tempe, defeating ASU 3-0 and Thunderbird International Business College 3-1, the Wildcats look to capitalize on their recent success.
"The game plan this weekend is to avoid complacency," Hunter said. "We are going to use our high-pressured offensive attack and rely on our fast defense. Our injuries are healing as well."
Junior stopper Randy Danker, who left last game after suffering a vicious blow to the head and possible concussion, is listed as probable for this weekend's match-ups.
Arizona will challenge Embry-Riddle this Saturday at 11 a.m. and ASU at 8 p.m. All games will be held at Rincon field, 501 S. Plummer Ave.
