Online Exclusive: Pac-10 Football Notes

Arizona State (5-2, 2-0)
Last week: Beat Oregon State 13-9
This week: No. 6 Oregon (6-0, 2-0)

For the first time this season, ASU won because of its defense, not its offense, against Oregon State last weekend. With time winding down and Oregon State pushing the defense into its own end zone, the Sun Devils held the line, forcing two sacks and holding the Beavers to a meaningless field goal. It capped off a game where the previously-torrid offense only racked up 241 total yards and was won solely on the Sun Devils' ability to rattle OSU quarterback Derek Anderson.

California (4-3, 1-2)
Last week: Lost to USC 30-28
This week: UCLA (4-2, 1-1)

Head coach Jeff Tedford felt he got jobbed by the refs in Saturday's loss to USC, and the Pac-10 office confirmed as much Tuesday, admitting the two controversial calls - Kareem Kelly's bobble in the end zone that was ruled a catch, and a no-call on what appeared to be pass interference by USC that resulted in a Kyle Boller interception - were wrong. Not that it matters to Tedford now, because the loss dropped the Bears to 1-2 in conference play and now means the team has little to no shot of contending for the conference title.

No. 6 Oregon (6-0, 2-0)
Last week: Beat UCLA 31-30
This week: Arizona State (5-2, 2-0)

This will be a reunion game of sorts for the Ducks, who welcome former offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter and former tight ends coach Tom Osborne - both at ASU now - this weekend in Eugene. The reunion itself isn't what's surprising, but the circumstances that now surround it are. Arizona State is playing unexpectedly well, and are tied with the Ducks for second place in the conference. Since Koetter is so familiar with the offense run at Oregon, this could prove to be a difficult game for the Ducks. Then again, Oregon is coming off a close one against UCLA that could prove to be a galvanizing force for this young team.

Oregon State (4-3, 0-3)
Last week: Lost to Arizona State 13-9
This week: Bye

The Beavers' offense continued its downward spiral from one of the best in the country before conference play started to one of the worst in the Pac-10 now that they've suffered three-straight losses. First-year starter Derek Anderson had his worst performance of the young season, completing only 16 of his 40 pass attempts for zero touchdowns and three interceptions. To top it off, he spent plenty of time on the turf, getting sacked seven times. It's likely things will only get worse before they get better, as an angry Cal team coming off a tough loss will want to prove a point in Corvallis. This could get ugly.

Stanford (1-4, 0-2)
Last week: Lost to Washington State 36-11
This week: Arizona (3-3, 0-2)

Head coach Buddy Teevens is eschewing the ways of his old boss, Steve Spurrier, and doing his best to stick to one quarterback, Chris Lewis. He said this week that Lewis remains the starter despite his continuing inaccuracy and tendency to get intercepted. In the past two games, Lewis has thrown four picks to only one touchdown. The only thing that's allowed Stanford to remain somewhat competitive is a solid running game, which racked up 150 yards against Washington State last week. But Teevens isn't known for the run, and he doesn't want his teams to be either.

No. 19 USC (4-2, 2-1)
Last week: Beat California 30-28
This week: No. 22 Washington (4-2, 1-1)

The vaunted Trojans defense took another hit this week with the news that defensive tackle Shaun Cody will miss the rest of the season with a torn MCL. Nose tackle Mike Patterson will shift over to fill the vacancy. The unit has been struggling without safety Troy Polamalu, who has missed the last two games with a high ankle sprain. Polamalu is currently day-to-day and has been doing some light running drills in practice, but the coaching staff isn't optimistic he'll be back to full speed for this weekend's game against the Huskies.

UCLA (4-2, 1-1)
Last week: Lost to Oregon 31-30
This week: California (4-3, 1-2)

It might come down to the pivotal play against Oregon last weekend as to whether or not head coach Bob Toledo gets fired after this season. The play likely cost the Bruins a win over the top team in the conference. With a six-point lead and facing a fourth-and-15, Toledo elected to fake a field goal, falling short. The kick would have been a 45-yard attempt, well within kicker Chris Griffith's range. But Toledo apparently didn't trust Griffith - who has been inconsistent this season - and took a risk. UCLA lost by one point. It looks like the hot seat just got nuclear.

No. 22 Washington (4-2, 1-1)
Last week: Beat Arizona 32-28
This week: No. 19 USC (4-2, 1-1)

Sophomore wide receiver Reggie Williams finally broke out Saturday, torching the Arizona secondary for 184 yards and three touchdowns on eight catches. Of the eight, it was the last one - an 80-yard touchdown catch off a short slant pass - that was most impressive and won the game for the Huskies. It was the performance that head coach Rick Neuheisel had been waiting for all season, who has spent much of the season calling out his star receiver in the press.

No. 10 Washington State
Last week: Beat Stanford 36-11
This week: Bye

Many coaches usually downplay a rout against a bad team. Not Mike Price, however, who found plenty to praise in his team's win over the Cardinal last week. He said he was proud of his team for making it a blowout early instead of letting Stanford hang around, among other things. Expect the love-fest to last at least another week, as the Huskies have a break and won't practice until Thursday.
