Arizona senior golfer Laura Myerscough posted a first round 2-under-par 71 Wednesday to open the World Amateur Golf Team Championships in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Myerscough, who stands in third place individually, helped the US team to second place after round one.

Myerscough trails first-round leader Naree Song Wongluekiet of Thailand by three strokes. Wongluekiet opened the tournament by shooting 5-under 68. Thailand holds the team lead at 7-under after round one. The United States is in second place at 3-under-par.

The senior from Charleston, Ill., carded five birdies en route to her 2-under-par 71. Myerscough was one of only 16 golfers in the 114-player field to post a subpar round yesterday.

The Women's World Amateur Team Championship is being conducted at Saujana Golf and Country Club in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Arizona men's golfer Ricky Barnes will participate in the men's championship, which will be played Oct. 24-Oct. 27 at the same site.

Sponsored by the World Amateur Golf Council, which comprises national governing bodies of golf in more than 90 countries, the World Amateur Team Championship is a biennial international amateur golf competition which is rotated among three geographic zones: Australasian, American and European-African.

The top-rated Arizona women's golf team, sans Myerscough, opens play Friday at the Stanford-Pepsi Intercollegiate in Palo Alto, Calif.
