The one problem with an intrasquad scrimmage is that when one team or player looks good, there is someone on the other side that looks bad.

Last night, in the Pepsi Red-Blue Game, it was either someone didn't get back on defense, someone didn't pick the right lane to run or someone didn't box out on a rebound, leaving the opposing team an opportunity to shine.

Senior Jason Gardner's Red team impressed at the expense of sophomore Will Bynum's Blue team, especially in the second half, when the Blue team was outscored by 22 points.

Nothing against Bynum ÷ he had a fine game himself, scoring 12 and dishing out five assists ÷ but the difference was the leadership at the point guard position that Gardner brought to his Red team in the 105-87 win.

"The Red team ran the Blue team off the court in the second half," head coach Lute Olson said. "In the second half you could say that four of the five Red players outplayed the Blue players."

While Gardner was able to run the point and push the ball up to freshman Andre Iguodala, who was the benefactor on four of Gardner's 14 assists, Bynum's team was unable to get any flow on offense.

Gardner had almost a 5-to-1 assist-turnover ratio compared to Bynum, who made nine turnovers to only five assists.

"I was not happy with the Blues all night long, running the lanes and making themselves available for passes ahead," Olson said.

In all, the Red team had 24 assists compared to only 17 by the Blue team; but the Blue team also had 11 more turnovers than the Red.

"Basically, in the first half we got beat on the boards," said Iguodala, who had 16 of his 23 points in the second half to lead the Red team. "In the second half ,the difference was that we were able to get the boards and push the ball down court and get easy hoops."

That was the case on one of the many Red fast breaks in the final frame.

On one of them it was Gardner blowing by the opposing defense and throwing a pass off the backboard for a trailing Iguodala, who slammed the ball, which brought the 8,860 in attendance to stand up and cheer.

Part of the problem for the Blue team was that senior Luke Walton, who can be considered a point guard at times himself, was still not at 100 percent after missing the last three days of practice with a dislocated pinkie. Walton was slow to get up the court at times, despite scoring 23 points.

"It's amazing that you could miss three days of practice and the conditioning is completely different," said Olson about Walton.

One difference come Tuesday is that Olson will have all 14 of his players at his disposal when the Wildcats hit the court against the EA All-Stars. Olson will pick his starting five on Saturday.

The other difference on Tuesday will be that if someone plays poorly, Olson will be able to take him out of the game and explain to him what went wrong, unlike last night when the Wildcats only had a bench of three players on both sides combined.

"If someone is not running the lanes (in a game) I will tell them when they are sitting on the bench rather than when they are on the floor as in tonight," Olson said.

And when Olson pulls a player out of the game, the player will get the message before he sees the court again.
