Tonight in Stanford, Calif., two of the nation's top women's volleyball players will go head-to-head in Stanford's Logan Tom and Arizona's Kim Glass.
Tom, the reigning NCAA Player of the Year and an Olympian, was outplayed by Glass in their first meeting at McKale Center, where the freshman Glass finished with a match-high 28 kills.
"I knew how good she was," Tom said. "I didn't expect anything less of her."
After taking on No. 4 Stanford tonight, the No. 16 Arizona women's volleyball team will face California tomorrow.
In last month's meeting, the Cardinal (21-3 overall, 11-2 Pacific 10 Conference) were on the verge of embarrassing the Wildcats in front of a Pac-10 record crowd of 9,141 fans, as they held a dominating 2-0 lead.
However, the Wildcats (12-8, 7-5) displayed their tenacity and they fought back to eventually pull out a dramatic 3-2 upset of the defending national champion Cardinal.
Individually, Glass and Tom both put on an offensive showcase for the crowd.
Glass said playing against Tom was a great experience, but the match is between Arizona and Stanford, not just Glass and Tom.
"Playing against an Olympian is always great," Glass said. "It brings out the best of everyone playing against her, but we are focused on what we need to do as a team to win."
However, the numbers that both outside hitters have put up this season have been nothing short of remarkable.
Glass leads the Wildcats with 357 kills and a 4.96 kills-per-game average.
Tom doesn't have as many kills on the season as Glass, with only 291, but she has averaged a team-high 4.77 kills per game.
The Cardinal are fresh off their victory over No. 2 Southern California, and they are looking for some payback after their crushing defeat to the Wildcats in Tucson.
"We definitely remember our last match with Arizona," Tom said. "We have just moved on and we know that it is always a great match when Stanford plays Arizona."
Head coach David Rubio said that he expects nothing less then a great match between the Wildcats and Cardinal.
"Stanford motivates us to always play our best," Rubio said. "Logan Tom is the best player in the country, and that motivates us. We are at the point of the season that we know we can go into Stanford and beat them."
The Wildcats have only defeated Stanford four times in 32 meetings and for UA to have a chance to gain its fifth victory over the Cardinal, Rubio said it is imperative that senior outside hitter Shannon Torregrosa becomes more involved in the offense.
In Arizona's last meeting with the Cardinal, Torregrosa was the difference as her jump serve and blocking at the net threw off the potent Cardinal attack.
"We have to have a balanced offense," Rubio said. " Right now we are relying on three arms ÷ Glass, Lisa Rutledge and Bre Ladd. We need to get Shannon more involved to give us another offensive weapon."
After the Wildcats are done with the Cardinal they will take on the Golden Bears.
Last month, California (15-8, 5-8) spoiled Arizona's victory over Stanford as they swept the Wildcats 3-0.
