Volleyball Notes: Rubio happy for football team, coach

Last weekend, the UA football team surprised the Tucson community when it defeated California.

The win was a big step for the Wildcat football program, and women's volleyball head coach David Rubio was very happy for John Mackovic, the football players and the Arizona athletic department.

Rubio said that the meeting that 40 players had with President Peter Likins and Mackovic's press conference was the best thing that could have happened for the struggling Wildcats.

"With everything that happened last week, no one expected them to win," Rubio said. "I would bet that 90 percent of the people that support the football team would have never expected them to have a shot under the circumstances. I guarantee that if the team didn't go through the week that they had, that California would have won the game."

Rubio said that great coaches have the ability to get the best out of their players and figure out a way to help the team win.

"Great coaches read the emotion of their players." Rubio said. "They have the ability to push players to play their best. This week was a catharsis for the players. They felt good after what happened last week, and they came out and played the way they were feeling. The football program means a lot to everyone, and I am happy for everyone in the program."

UA freshman volleyball player Kim Glass has been suffering from a nagging calf strain that caused her to play in limited action over the weekend.

With No. 1 Southern California and No. 21 UCLA on the schedule this week, the No. 16 Wildcats will need Glass to return to the lineup to have a chance of upsetting the Trojans.

As of today, Glass will be starting for the Wildcats against the Trojans tomorrow night.

"She feels better," Rubio said. "We are taking it day-by-day, but I plan on starting her against USC."

Glass is 18 kills shy of breaking Barb Bell's freshman record of 417 kills in a season.

Over the weekend, Glass's play was limited, but her importance to the team was apparent, as the Wildcats were +19 in the score column when she was on the floor.

The Wildcats concluded their home schedule and are currently leading the Pacific 10 Conference in attendance.

UA has averaged 2,178 fans per match this season, which is first in the Pac-10 and seventh nationally.

This season, the Wildcats also broke their own home attendance record with 26,142 fans that came to support the volleyball program.

"The fans bring energy to the game," junior Christina Frost said. "It has been so awesome playing in front of so many people."
