Coming into this weekend's two-game set against DePaul, UA Icecat head coach Leo Golembiewski said offensive inconsistency was an area of concern for the team, but after the Icecats' two blowout wins over the Blue Demons, it might not be that big of a concern.
Arizona outscored Depaul, 25-1 in the two-game sweep, extending its winning streak to four games.
Yet despite the high offensive output and lopsided margins, Golembiewski said Arizona must keep things in perspective heading into their next series against national tournament contender Oklahoma.
"We have to stay in perspective," he said. "I was pleased with our firepower, (but) we still have some big questions."
Among those questions is the health of forwards Mickey Meehan and Craig Irwin.
Irwin will skate today for the first time since sustaining a shoulder injury Jan. 8 against St. Louis.
The condition of UA leading goal scorer Meehan, who is trying to recover from a knee injury sustained earlier in the year, is still uncertain.
In their absence Friday and Saturday, however, the remaining Icecats stepped up, firing 137 shots on the goal over the course of the two games and producing their most goals of the season.
"We played well as a team this weekend. All our lines needed to be productive, and for the most part, we did that," junior forward Cole Dunlop said.
Dunlop scored a hat trick Saturday, one goal Friday and passed for six assists on the weekend.
Dunlop was not the only Icecat to record a hat trick against the Blue Demons (5-10-1).
Junior defensemen Mike Pelletier and Nick Wedster and senior forward Shaun Brooks all earned three goals in Friday night's victory.
"We haven't had a killer instinct most of the year, but we brought it tonight," Pelletier said.
Arizona beat the Blue Demons 16-0 Friday and 9-1 Saturday.
The Icecats went at DePaul early, scoring five goals in the first period. They didn't relent the rest of the night, scoring seven more in the second and four in the third period.
Juniors D.J. Pelletier and Don Holtz added two goals apiece to the goal parade, while freshmen Kyle Chilton and Scott Marshall and junior Jerald Zivic added one each.
Freshman goaltender Luke Edwall, getting his second start in place of senior Bryan Aronchick, blanked DePaul for his second shutout.
Aronchick missed the series due to a broken finger he suffered last week in practice.
Golembiewski said this was a good series for the team's first line goaltender to miss, as it gave ice time to Edwall and junior Casey Leyva, who made his first appearance Saturday and stopped 22 shots.
Golembiewski said he was impressed with the goaltenders and added that the defense as a whole showed "a lot of offensive prowess."
Joining the Pelletiers and Wedster in the goal column for the Icecat defense was senior Keith Mitchell, who lit the goal lamp once Saturday night.
Marshall, Mike Pelletier and Brooks all contributed a goal Saturday, while Holtz had his second consecutive two-goal outing.
"We had to use (the DePaul series) to get ready for Oklahoma, to work on some things," D.J. Pelletier said.
"It was good to have new players step up," he added. "This was good experience, getting some ice time."
The experience could play an integral role in the next series, one that could determine whether or not the UA earns a berth in the American Collegiate Hockey Association national tournament.
"We'll build on these four games and see how it goes," Dunlop said of the upcoming matchup with Oklahoma.
