The No. 4 Arizona men's swim team used a 36-point comeback to keep the Wildcats perfect over the weekend, with both the men and women's teams beating Northwestern and Washington in the two-day meet at Hillenbrand Aquatic Center.
"The men's team did a great job coming back, and the women swam well," said UA head coach Frank Busch. "There was a great team effort on the men's side."
Busch said that watching the men's team Friday and Saturday was like watching two different teams, but he added that he did not know what to expect from Washington and Northwestern.
The 200-yard medley relay team of juniors Dave Rollins, Simon Burnett, Lyndon Ferns and freshman Ivan Barnes started off the men's wins in the first five events with a time of 1:31.22 in the event. Junior Tyler DeBerry captured first place in the 1,650y freestyle with a time of 15:46.57, while freshman Matt Biel finished second.
Ferns beat Northwestern's Matt Grevers in a close race in the 200y freestyle, clocking a time of 1:38.68. Barnes won the 100y breaststroke with a time of 55.71, and senior Nate Stevens was second. Ferns captured second in the 50y freestyle (20.13) and Simon Burnett took third.
Freshman Nick Thoman took first in the 200y butterfly (1:52.99) and finished second in the 100y backstroke. Rollins finished first in the 200y individual medley (1:52.70) and Barnes took third. The 400y freestyle relay team of Ferns, Burnett, senior Byron Jeffers and freshman Jonas Persson took second place.
The No. 4 women's team also had some great performances from Jena Gresdal, Lacey Nymeyer and Emily Mason.
"It was a great meet," said Mason, a senior. "I was really impressed with how the boys came back."
The women's 200y medley relay team of juniors Gresdal and Erin Sieper, sophomore Whitney Myers and freshman Nymeyer finished first with a time of 1:43.16. Five women on the team clocked times in exhibition races that were better than that of the winner of the actual event.
Mason began the trend, swimming in the 1,000y freestyle with a time of 10:12.38, which beat the first place time of 10:21.44. Sieper swam the 100y breaststroke (1:03.76), Nymeyer swam the 200y freestyle (1:50.71), junior Marshi Smith swam the 100y backstroke (56.67) and Mason swam the 200y individual medley (2:05.02).
Gresdal finished first in the 50y freestyle with a time of 23.21, and the 400y free relay team of Gresdal, Sieper, Myers and Nymeyer finished third (3:31.17).
"The team swam really well, I am so pleased," said Nymeyer. "Overall, the outcome was good."
The Wildcats are in the pool again Friday and Saturday at Hillenbrand Aquatic Center, where they will host California and Stanford. The action begins Friday at 2 p.m. against the Golden Bears.
