Track sprints into Nebraska

A week after the UA men's and women's track and field team won nine individual awards at the Mountain West/Pacific 10 Conference competition, it will compete in Lincoln, Neb., today in their second meet of the season.

The Wildcats will be one of five teams in the Sevigne Husker Invitational taking place in the Bob Devaney Sports Center.

UA head coach Dave Murray will take 22 men and 15 women to the meet, which will feature Brigham Young, Colorado, Washington State, Oregon (men) and the host team, Nebraska.

Senior National Champion Brianna Glenn, who will run the 200m for the first time this season, will lead the No. 2 Wildcat women.

As the defending national champion in the 200m and long jump, Glenn said he hopes to start this year like she ended the last - with a victory.

Although UA would love to pick up the win, Murray said he is more concerned with the team's common goals right now.

"Our goal is to get people qualified for the major meets at the end, like the Mountain Pacific Championships and the NCAA Indoor Championships," he said. "It's nice to win and score high, but we want to get our athletes to the championships."

Senior Tara Chaplin, who is fresh off a national championship of her own in cross country in the fall, and senior Abby Peters will be competing in the 5,000m in hopes of reaching the NCAA qualifying mark.

On the men's side, Nebraska comes in as the only team ranked in the Top 25.

UA senior Mike Kenyon will try to qualify in the 400m after scoring a provisional mark last week as well as freshman Adrain Thomas as he competes for a spot on the 4x400m relay team.

Although the team did well last week, Murray said he wants to see a better performance this week.

"Nebraska will be the favorite since they get to compete at home with their whole team," he said. "I'm concerned with doing well."
