Like a scene out of the hockey cinema classic "Slap Shot," the Icecats will hop on a bus for the 14-hour ride to Boulder, Colo. to face the University of Colorado for a two-game series beginning tonight.
The weekend will mark the last action of the season that will affect the Icecats' seeding for the upcoming 12-team American Collegiate Hockey Association national tournament next month.
The No. 11 Icecats know that a slip-up in Boulder could push them to the No. 12 spot for nationals and force an immediate match-up with defending national champion and top-ranked Penn State.
Senior Pavel Jandura has flourished offensively since his move from defenseman to forward seven games ago, and realizes his team needs to take care of business one last time on the road this season.
"We need to win and just want to move up a little bit and play someone other than No. 1 or No. 2," Jandura said.
After becoming the Icecats' all-time leading scorer among defensemen earlier this season, the Czech native has scored in every game as a forward, amassing 12 goals.
Surprisingly, the transition has not been very difficult for Jandura - even after spending three-and-a-half seasons back on the blueline.
"I was a puck-rushing defenseman, so it has not been that big of a difference for me," Jandura said. "I actually enjoy it more.
"I can score more goals, but I don't shoot as much - it's more getting the puck deep and working it around."
UA will need the continued offensive support from Jandura along with the rest of its three offensive lines if they hope to knock off the Buffaloes two more times this season.
The Icecats handed Colorado consecutive defeats of 5-1 and 5-4 in November.
Head coach Leo Golembiewski has been impressed with the Icecats' recent play away from the Tucson Convention Center. UA (19-3-1) is a perfect 7-0 on the road this season.
Despite the rigors that accompany the team's latest trip, Golembiewski does not anticipate it will slow down his squad.
"We'd much rather hop on a plane for the hour or so flight, but we don't exactly have those kind of luxuries," Golembiewski said. "But the guys should be fine.
"With the TVs and VCRs on the bus today I don't think the trip is as bad as it used to be."
Just ask Paul Newman.
