Gymcats fall to Stanford, look to regroup against Cal

After an uncharacteristic showing against UCLA two weeks ago, Gymcat Randi Liljenquist was able to step back into the forefront with a dominant individual performance at Stanford last Friday night.

Despite Liljenquist's efforts, and winning the team vault title (49.375) for the fifth-straight meet while also recording a season high 49.275 on bars, No. 9 Arizona Gymcats (6-2, 1-2 Pac-10) fell to No. 12 Stanford on Feb. 1, 197.250-195.175.

The No. 11 UA Basketball team was on hand to witness the Gymcats in action in Stanford, Calif., supporting their fellow Wildcats the night before their thrilling overtime win over the Cardinal.

Liljenquist, a senior All-American from nearby Canyon Del Oro High School, scored a 39.900 en route to winning her third overall title of year. She also managed second place finishes on bars (9.900) and beam (9.900), to go along with a tie for first on floor exercise (9.925) with UA Freshman Katie Johnson. Johnson showed another solid performance coming off being named Pac-10 Conference Gymnast of the week for Jan. 22-28.

Next up for Arizona is California in McKale Center tonight at 7:30 p.m. The Golden Bears (3-2, 1-2 Pac-10) swept the Wildcats last season in two meets. Arizona last defeated Cal on Feb. 4, 2000.

"Our meet against Stanford was a tough loss. As a team we need to learn from our performance, regroup and put together a better effort against Cal," Head Coach Bill Ryden said. "Hopefully they have a solid meet against us because it will force us to step up and perform at our best."

Cal is the third consecutive Pac-10 conference opponent faced by Arizona.
