While many of the rest of Arizona students were still taking solace in the last weekend of break, the Arizona swimming and diving teams were taking back to the pool.

The men’s and women’s teams, both ranked No. 5, maintained their flawless records Friday.

The men (3-0, 2-0 Pacific 10 Conference) beat Washington 145-116, while the women (5-0, 4-0) defeated No.23 Washington 168-87, beat Oregon State 172-83 and drowned Northern Arizona 201-93.

The men took first place in five of their events, which began with the 200-yard medley relay. The team of seniors Simon Burnett and Lyndon Ferns, sophomore Ivan Barnes and freshman Ryan Richardson swam it in a time of 1:30.97.

Senior Tyler DeBerry took first place in the 200y freestyle in 9:34.02. Junior Adam Ritter contributed a first place as well in the 100y backstroke in 51.48.

Barnes also posted a first place in the 100y breaststroke with a time of 55.62 while Burnett finished first in the 100y freestyle as well, in 45.32.

The 500y freestyle proved to be a prosperous event for the men’s team, as Arizona had three of the top five swimmers in the event. Sophomore Matt Biel finished second while Ritter placed third and Burnett took fifth.

Sophomore Albert Subirats posted a first place win in the 100y butterfly in 49.13 and Ferns picked up another first place in the 200y medley relay with a time of 1:53.69.

The team of Ritter, Subirats, Burnett, and senior Dave Rollins claimed the top spot in the 200y free relay with a time of 1:22.50.

The women’s team finished first in 14 events during the meet.

In the 200y medley relay the team of seniors Jenna Gresdal, Erin Sieper, Lisa Pursley and junior Kathryn Elofson posted a time of 1:44.56.

Sophomore Lacey Nymeyer took first in the 500y freestyle with a time of 10:09.88. Nymeyer also placed first in the 50y freestyle in 23.60 and Gresdal contributed another first place in the 200y freestyle in 1:51.97 in addition to winning the 200y backstroke.

In the 100y backstroke, senior Marshi Smith took first place with a time of 57.27. Sieper picked up another first place in the 100y breaststroke in 1:04.72 while freshman Taylor Baughman won the 100y freestyle with a time of 52.41.

Sophomore Jacquelyn Craft took first in 200y breaststroke in 2:19.51.

The women finished the competition in an exhibition heat of the 200 free relay of Nymeyer, junior Whitney Myers, freshman Anna Turner and Gresdal, who finished with a time of 1:48.88.

The divers also had a prosperous meet. Senior Tiffany Manning took first place in both the 1-meter and 3m springboard events.

The Wildcats will be swimming next Jan. 20-21 against Stanford and University of California at Berkeley.
