Josh Fields/Arizona Daily Wildcat Arizona shortstop Jason Donald was named to Baseball America’s second team on their All-American squad. His teammate, closer Mark Melancon – who may work his way into the starting rotation next season – was named to the third team.

Shortstop, pitcher earn All-America third-team nods

Two baseball juniors have earned preseason All-America honors from Baseball America.

Shortstop Jason Donald received second-team honors and pitcher Mark Melancon earned third-team recognition.

“I’m pleased for both of them,” head coach Andy Lopez said in a press release. “Jason and Mark have already accomplished so much during their careers here and the recognition is well deserved. They’re our team leaders this year and will play a huge part in our success.”

Donald hit .288 with five home runs and 33 RBIs last year and has started 123 of 124 games in his career.

Melancon led Arizona with a 2.58 ERA last season and set a single-season saves record with 11 but may move to the starting rotation this year.

Wildcats build up recruiting class with senior signings

The Wildcats signed 11 high school seniors to National Letters of Intent during the early signing period. The class features four pitchers, three infielders, and two outfielders and catchers.

“We’re excited about this group of players,” Lopez said in a press release. “The coaching staff feels that this group will not only help maintain the high standards and level of play of the Wildcat baseball program, but will also help further enhance our goal of bringing home a national championship to Tucson.”

The class includes three prospects in Baseball America’s Top 100 rankings, including. righthander Jason Stoffel, No. 18, outfielder Drew Rundle, No. 49, and third baseman/outfielder Eric Castro, No. 96.
