Phx. med school to open in 2006

The latest details of a proposed medical school in Phoenix were presented at the Arizona Board of Regents meeting Friday, where university officials projected the first Phoenix medical school class of 24 students would begin July 2006.

The admissions process for the new medical school in Phoenix is expected to begin in September, UA College of Medicine administrators said Friday.

At the meeting, it was still unknown how the project will be funded or an estimated cost, but Regents President Gary Stuart said officials are looking into both public and private sectors. [Read article]

Cats lose for first time in first road trip of year

The Arizona men's basketball team was on the receiving end of many lessons during the No. 10 Wildcats' 78-60 loss to Virginia yesterday in Charlottesville, Va.

The first: The Atlantic Coast Conference - home to three of the Associated Press poll's top four teams and six of the nation's top 20 - could be college basketball's best conference after all, especially since the unranked Cavaliers were picked to finish eighth come the end of conference play. Che Guevara. Patrick Henry. Spartacus. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. There is a connection. Sort of. This weekend, the University of Arizona Opera Theater will present the fully staged Mozart masterpiece "Le Nozze di Figaro" ("The Marriage of Figaro"). The opera was first performed in Vienna on May 1, 1786.

The opera was based on a play by Pierre Beaumarchais, which was written before the French Revolution and banned in Paris for its revolutionary ideas. "Le Nozze di Figaro" follows the adventures of a comical servant, Figaro, as he outwits and traps an aristocratic count who wants his woman.  [ Read article]
